About

Lisa D. Hickey is known for her luminous explorations of light, texture and movement in nature. She works in oil to translate the sensory-rich experience of wandering through the woods, looking up through the leaves. A kaleidoscope view that treads a wobbly line between abstraction and reality, Lisa’s paintings are windows into a way of seeing with wonder. Chasing this dream her whole life, Lisa has been working as a full-time artist for over a decade. Her paintings hang in private and corporate collections across Canada, the US, Europe and Australia. When she is not in the woods, she regularly shows in galleries, art fairs and other community spaces.

PROCESS
Lisa paints a la prima (wet on wet) using oil paint for its rich, velvety character. Using natural bristle brushes, the thick, buttery paint holds every mark and creates a luxurious finish that resonates with intense colour and texture. Lisa lays down brushstrokes to capture the glimmer of light through leaves and branches. She works quickly to convey a fleeting moment and does not revisit the mark once it has been made. Her process is immediate and full of energy. with an awareness of her impact on the environment at the forefront of her practice, Lisa switched from acrylics to oils. She favours the natural simplicity of linseed (flax) and walnut oil, and avoids paint thinners and other harsh chemicals.
